The 'new' light house was built in 1806 and cost £8,000. It was
built without the aid of scaffolding, in less than a year and stands
27 metres high. It boasts 119 steps to the lantern room at the top and
the lens weighs in at 3.5 tons and features 500 prisms.
The light from the lighthouse can be seen 24 miles
away and like each lighthouse has it's own 'flash pattern'. The
flash pattern is 4 white flashes every 15 seconds. This enables
mariners to locate their position.
The lighthouse originally had 3 keepers that lived in the houses
ajacent to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is now monitored remotely
and a caretaker visits once a week to clean the lens and check
the status of the light.
Tours of the lighthouse take place during the summer from 11:00
to 16:00 hours and costs £2.00 for adults & £1.00
for children.
