Sewerby Village Residents Association Mid-term Meeting - April 2002

On Friday 5 April the Sewerby Village Residents Association held their mid-term meeting in the St. John's Church Hall. The meeting was attended by Cllr. Richard Harrap.

The residents heard from the secretary, Colin Breeze all the issues that had come to pass during the last 6 months. These included the closure of the public toilets on cliff top and the traffic calming requests.

A vote was carried out to have the Sewerby Village sign by the level-crossing to be placed back in its original location at the far side of the level-crossing. This will now be addressed to the local council.

A surprise attendee was Mr. Greg Knight MP. He listened to what concerns the villagers had, especially the pollution, closure of the toilets and the traffic calming. He finished by saying that he would help the Association in any way he could to rectify the issues raised.

Sewerby Hall & Gardens - April 2002

What a fabulous weekend we had over the Easter break. The Hall, Gardens and Village were packed with tourists. The sun actually shone and temperatures reached 16 Degrees.

The main high light over the break was the Medieval Jousting. Children and adults alike sat open mouthed as they watched the antics of the 'Black Knight'.

The hall and gardens had never been so busy. Picnics were had whilst children played football or visited the Zoo.

Let us hope that now people have seen the beautiful surroundings of Sewerby Village that they continue to come year after year. (Week after week would be nicer!)

Village fights for its identity - March 2002

A drive to have roadsigns welcoming motorists to 'Sewerby Village' will be turned down.

Sewerby Residents Association has petitioned for the word 'Village' to be added to the signs, because it wants visitors to know it is not part of Bridlington.

Kate Gibbs, a spokesperson for the association said: "It's so the village doesn't lose its identity, otherwise it's going to be swallowed up by Bridlington. We are a village and we have always been a village. This is not a major request."

But the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which received the petition, said there were strict Government guidelines restricting the designs and wording of boundary signs, and that the residents association omitted ' village' from its title.

Colin Stephenson said "Everybody knows it's a village and we couldn't go against Government regulations."

However a compromise may be on the cards. Mr. Stephenson confirmed that new signs with the words 'Historical Village' under the name Sewerby could be approved for both ends of the village at a cost of £160 per sign.

Sewerby Village Residents Association Annual Dinner - January 2002

Once again the Old Forge Restaurant was the venue for the Sewerby Residents annual dinner. Guest of honour was Richard Harrap MP.

The evening was a great success with all the villagers thoroughly enjoying themselves and raising over £100 in the process.
